This engrossing book surveys an era that has fired the historical imagination for centuries. In it Robert A. Scott explores why medieval people built Gothic cathedrals, how they built them, what conception of the divine lay behind their creation, and how religious and secular leaders used cathedrals for social and political purposes.
While most books about Gothic cathedrals focus on a particular building or on the cathedrals of a specific region, The Gothic Enterprise considers the idea of the cathedral as a humanly created space. Scott discusses why an impoverished people would commit so many social and personal resources to building something so physically stupendous and what this says about their ideas of the sacred, especially the vital role they ascribed to the divine as a protector against the dangers of everyday life.
Scott also explains such things as the role of relics, the quarrying and transporting of stone, and the incessant conflict cathedral-building projects caused within their communities. Finally, by drawing comparisons between Gothic cathedrals and other monumental building projects, such as Stonehenge, Scott expands our understanding of the human impulses that shape our landscape.
Astonishment!!! : a romance of a century ago
Like millions of people across the world yesterday, we at UC Press were shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the fire that ravaged Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. This book, which centres on the very misfortunate heroine Emily and her journey into the world of mystery and the macabre through a forced marriage, is quite heavy-going but a must-read for anyone interested in the evolution of Gothic literature.
It also has some beautiful descriptions of the Italian countryside. Free on Project Gutenburg or in print on Amazon. Another book that frequently pops up in lists of essential Gothic reads, Frankenstein is as much sci-fi as it is gothic. Perhaps the epitome of Gothic Romance. A relatively unknown work compared to the others on this list.
A genuinely chilling ghost story about an old, haunted violin. Readers looking for a bit of an unknown classic should check it out. The character of the Phantom whose name is Erik, by the way is much more devious and frightening than his Webber counterpart, but no less tragic in my opinion. Wildly enjoyable for lovers of all things Gothic.
A must-read for vampire fans, as this novella was probably the most influential work in establishing the characteristics of the female vampire and in particular, the lesbian vampire.

The titular character is fascinating, seductive, menacing and exceptionally appealing. And finally, the ending is brilliant and shocking. Not to be missed. Other books in this series. Add to basket. The Castle of Wolfenbach Eliza Parsons.
