Kenya Special was one of Soundway Records' most popular releases and is considered a milestone in East African compilations. Now comes the latest release from Soundway's acclaimed African 'Special' compilation series, featuring 20 extremely rare recordings from East Africa, an area barely touched by modern compilations. The release comes with detailed liner notes, original artwork and photography. This time the team of compilers have gone to even greater lengths to share a small part of what is slowly being accepted as an essential element of East Africa's cultural heritage: the history of recorded popular music.
The featured songs on Kenya Special : Volume Two bend the rules, break away from existing genres and sometimes experiment with foreign music trends.
The approach to musical rediscovery behind Kenya Special : Volume Two has its origins in a youthful movement of vinyl collecting as well as, to some extent, club culture. Oblique pop ensemble Vanishing Twin formed in over a love of unusual instruments, freaky records and the irresistble seducton of A Good Groove.
Man From Uranus on strange sounds, and flm-maker and visual artst Elliot Arndt on fute and percussion. Last year the band teamed up with producer Malcolm Cato Heliocentrics, Gaslamp Killer and wrapped their songs in layers of otherness and sub-aquatc obscurity. The resultng debut LP will be released on Soundway in September Championed by Gilles Peterson, The Quietus and Wire, the band played widely in , conjuring otherworldly grooves and esoteric euphony in a show that is equal parts crafed sound and improvised delirium.
For his next release on Soundway Records, Los Angeles-based Dexter Story hooks up with long time friend and compatriot of music, the saxophonist, jazz composer, producer and band-leader Kamasi Washington. A fierce, rumbling electro Ethio-Funk groove provides the platform for an intense and powerful interplay between Washington on tenor sax and Todd Simon on trumpet.
An instrumental cover version of Tilahun Gessesse's s cut of the same name, it's Story's homage to the oppressed Oromo people of Southern Ethiopia. Backed on the flip by the one cut from Story's 'Wondem' long-player that did not make it to vinyl when the LP version was cut, Nia Andrew's sublime and atmospheric collaboration on Eastern Prayer will keep all those happy who grumbled at it's exclusion from wax first time around. Initally travelling with the aim of gaining perspectve as a musician and to discover a new world of music frst hand, Huw found himself humbled by such a welcoming community of artsts, mostly belonging to the celebrated Suso and Kuyateh griot families.

Soundway Records are to release the only self-tiled LP released by Nigeria's number-one producer of the s and early '80s, 'Sound President' Odion Iruoje. Originally produced on his own label Odion Ltd and released in , this over-looked and obscure LP was originally only ever distributed in small numbers back in the early s.
Iruoje is credited as being the man who signed Fela Kuti to EMI Nigeria and produced all of Fela's revolutionary early material from His first job upon being taken on by EMI Nigeria in was to be sent to London on a work experience placement at their London studios in St. Johns Wood. When he arrived he was pitched straight in at the deep-end, finding The Beatles deep in the recording of their Abbey Road album.
Featuring a handpicked squad of some of Iruoje's favourite musicians and session players and released on g vinyl in a tip-on sleeve it will be limited to copies only. A unique and singular blend, it's the sound of Eng- lish folk colliding head-on with the golden-era music of s West Africa and the West Indies. Towering vocal harmonies, soaring cello and clarinet lines, colossal basslines and drum paterns combine on an exquisite rollercoaster-ride of the emotons from euphoria to melancholia and back again.
Bound by a mutual love of the sun-drenched vintage sounds of afrobeat, soukous, highlife and roots reggae, the UK-based 5-piece re-invent these infuences around the instantly recognisable voice and fnger-style guitar of songwriter and singer Nick Rasle. The band's sound involves a meetng of diverse musical backgrounds: Fred Harper's gospel-infuenced drumming and James Grunwell's deep basslines provide the bed for Sam Murray's growling clarinet tone and Emma Coleman's strident cello and faw- less ear for vocal harmony.
Having enthralled festval audiences across the UK with their breathless live show, Hide Your Way sees the band embarking on a deeper exploraton of the playfulness and rhythmic agility which has come to defne their sound. A rich and varied pool of musical ideas sits alongside a plaintve lyricism, as the songs tell tales of regret, corrupton, loss and deceit.
The result is something fresh and original, mar- rying the emotonal vocal power of folk music with early jazz and delta-blues singing and the driving rhythms of West-Africa's golden era and the heart and soul of the great roots-reggae songwriters. People Rock Outfit P. This, their only album, was recorded in and originally released in only very small numbers on the EMI Nigeria label. Assembled by drummer Stoneface Iwuagwu and bassist Drago Uboma after the dissolution of their respective Life Everlasting and Speed Limit groups, Hygrades guitarist and producer Goddy Oku assisted behind the scenes but was replaced on the bandstand by Justus "Jay-U" Nnakwe.
This album is typical of mids Eastern Nigerian rock: rasping vocals, prominent pounding drums and blistering fuzz guitar and check those drum breaks on Movement Raw and wild and far from perfect in places it's a snapshot of youthful band just having a good time that will appeal to fans of Question Mark, S-job, Ofege, The Apostles and Ofo. Having never even appeared for sale on the Internet this is an album that desperately deserved a re-issue just to keep it from dis-appearing forever.

Lush string and horn arrangements give way to acidic commentary on the immigration system and slavery as well as incantations of unity. Producer and multi-instrumental director, Jack Yglesias also a core member of the underground pysch-jazz-funk unit The Heliocentrics leads the explosive ensemble. Joining them as guests on the album are two musical legends: The Sun Ra Arkestra's bandleader Marshall Allen on alto saxophone, ewi and vocals, and Nigerian Afro-beat colossus Orlando Julius on tenor sax who was at the time of the recording living with Yglesias and Zerpa.
The diversity of the Family Atlantica project is reflected in the lyrics, with singing and poetry in Spanish, English, Yoruba and Portuguese. This is a rapid-fire, rhythm-heavy journey, simultaneously moving between the past and future of trans-Atlantic roots music. Crossing pyschedelia, free jazz, metal, tambu, voodoo, fado and a lot more, the album is a musical cocktail and a journey of exper-imentaton.
Rising popularity and constant touring created conficts and changes that translated directly into some of the darker, more contemplatve moments on the record. The genre-crossing eight track album is the frst of a trilogy, inspired by a Colombian local legend Jaime Llano Gonzalez, a Hammond organist famous for playing traditonal Colombian music such as Pasillos, Bambucos, Cumbias, and foreign rhythms such as foxtrots or waltzes, in an ambient style.
Gonzalez's style of playing traditonal rhythms on the Hammond organ inspired Vargas to build a whole synthesizer ensemble simulatng this sound and developing intricate textures and counterpoint. This style of play is ofen impossible for a single organist, giving rise to Vargas' descripton of the genre as 'impossible organ music'. Requiring some digital sequencing techniques to achieve the result in the album, Vargas also chose to utlize an acoustc rhythm secton, including acoustc Bass, percussion or drums, also adding electronic drums and samplers.
