Not exactly a bird flying off into the blue. It is art and not worship, but draws from deep themes common to both art and worship. Shindell takes the listener along an imaginative border between belief and unbelief, where the more interesting things happen. Shindell, perhaps with Jamie Coots and certainly with Dave Carter, has found his own way of saying that our frame of reference for success or failure is not survival but how we might live bravely in the face of the fact of death and the uncertainty of living. Earlier in his career, Shindell was singled out by Joan Baez for an album of covers she originally intended to be solely, or at least primarily, drawn from female songwriters.

I believe Kristen Grainger is singing lead here doing a fine job of putting the song first with a smooth alto delivery.
Sorensen also originally hails from the northwest U. View full lyrics.

It is also frequently used as an auditory symbol of rural America, as in Washington Irving 's story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow , or as a plot device. For example, William Faulkner 's short story, "Barn Burning", makes several mentions of whip-poor-wills, e. He could tell that from the whip-poor-wills. They were everywhere now among the dark trees below him, constant and inflectioned and ceaseless, so that, as the instant for giving over to the day birds drew nearer and nearer, there was no interval at all between them.
American poet Robert Frost described the sound of a whip-poor-will in the fourth stanza of his poem "Ghost House". Whiting , and popularized by a Gene Austin recording, opens with the words, "When whip-poor-wills call, and evening is nigh, I hurry to my blue heaven. Just hear that whip-poor-will".

Jim Croce too makes a reference to this bird in his song "I got a name": "Like the whip-poor-will and the baby's cry, I've got a song, I've got a song". Can't let him go! The song, which reached 1 on the Billboard Hot , was sung by the movie's star, Debbie Reynolds.
Elton John and Bernie Taupin 's song " Philadelphia Freedom " features a flute mimicking the call of the eastern whip-poor-will and includes the lyrics "I like living easy without family ties, till the whippoorwill of freedom zapped me right between the eyes. US country band Blackberry Smoke released a album called The Whippoorwill , whose title song features the lyrics "I dreamed I heard that Whippoorwill sing, She sang my song and called me by name, I hung my head in shame". The song was written as a tribute to fellow songwriter, Dave Carter , who died of a heart attack on 19 July Country singer Randy Travis ' love song "Deeper Than The Holler" released as the second single on the album "Old 8x10" features the line "And longer than the song of a Whippoorwill" at the end of the chorus.
