I know these examples might seem a bit absurd. But these examples are great at revealing fear to you for what it really is, and that will be hugely beneficial in a moment when we get to the heart of how it interacts with your anxiety.
You go to the top of the stairs and look down, and you see a masked man rifling through drawers in the hallway. And when he makes his next move, your fear will switch again, and again.

So from now on, when you experience fear as a part of your anxiety, embrace it as a reassurance — feeling fear is solid proof that the outcome you dread is not happening. And the reason I went to such lengths to explain fear is because of its very close relationship to anxiety. When I discovered this concept it took me by surprise, and it was a while before it dawned on me just how important a discovery it was.
The fear you feel will probably last for several minutes — maybe even longer. So the next question is this: If your anxiety is artificial, then why does it affect you so powerfully, and more importantly, how do you stop it? This will result in one of two things happening:. These two outcomes are the subconscious ways that the anxiety is serving the person with stage fright.
This is a much more obvious example than anything you might be facing, because your anxiety is more random and more subtle in the way it presents itself.
The Revealing Truth About What Fear is and How It’s Not Anxiety
But do you see how in many cases anxiety is a choice, and how that choice usually serves you in an indirect, subconscious way? Once you realize that most of your anxiety is voluntarily manufactured by you in order to produce some other reward, it suddenly becomes much easier to see the true root-cause of many of the things you react to.
Think back to those examples of genuine fear — being confronted by a menacing man on a dark night, or facing an intruder in your home. You immediately make predictions about what will happen next, and then the fear is gone. The stakes are too high, and your subconscious mind knows it. My guess is you probably do a lot of this on a daily basis. I know I did! The option I described above IS available to you now. Choosing love is all about perception. My personal mantra which I repeat about 1, times a day is: I forgive myself and I choose to see this differently. Every time any one of those fears in the list comes up, I become aware of it, I let it out if I need to, and I repeat the mantra.
When you're not afraid to be quiet with yourself, to face your inner demons, to heal from the core, you'll no longer need alcohol, cigarettes, overeating, workaholism, painkillers, or other numbing distractions. You'll have the courage to do the transformative work that leads you to freedom on the other side of your journey.
When you're afraid of putting yourself in the arena because of fear of failure, success, uncertainty, judgment, criticism, or rejection, you'll tend to stand on the sidelines where you feel safer. When you face fear head on, motivation replaces procrastination. You're not "going for it" based on a fear-based need to "make it happen. When you're afraid, you avoid making the decisions your soul knows you must make.
Your intuition tells you it's time to leave that toxic relationship. Or quit that soul-sucking job. Or set boundaries with your mother. Or go to rehab. Or speak up about the integrity breaches at work. But you're terrified of the uncertainty. What you'll discover on the other side of fear, though, is that uncertainty is the gateway to possibility. When you don't know what the future holds, anything could happen. When you're afraid, you feel the need to micromanage everything. You mistakenly think you live in a hostile, random universe that's out to get you unless you grab the wheel with both hands and steer your life toward what you want.
You don't trust that it's a purposeful universe, that life is intelligent, that everything that happens helps you grow your soul, even if it's not what your ego wants. When you make the journey from fear to faith, you trust that it's a friendly universe. Then you can relax. Surrender to the flow of life, accept what is, let go of the handle, and enjoy the exciting ride. That's when life gets really fun.

When fear is operating you, you'll avoid speaking up. You won't stand up for what you believe. You won't let your voice be heard when your integrity is being threatened. You won't tell people when they hurt your feelings. You'll be too afraid to ask for what you really want.
