Measures for early detection and intervention find low interest in practice, e. Consequently, the related lack of sustained research funding resources makes it extremely difficult to maintain our prevention research group. What is creativity in research in general and in our field? In my understanding, it is a complex pattern of necessary basics, such as good knowledge of the field and of related research methodology, combined with curiosity and innovative thinking and the ability and freedom to question traditional perspectives, paradigms and all types of belief systems.

In addition, vision is needed, with a good helping of courage to challenge powerful traditional thinking and stimulating challenges, such as the end of funding for therapy research around , described above. The following sections show how we are creative as an organization, how we provide fruitful staff working conditions and a positive climate for creativity.

It is a tradition of the IFT to collaborate with practitioners in working groups, to participate in their conferences and to discuss and observe their experiences and working approaches. For example, recent developments in the possible role of impaired learning and impaired cognitive control in the onset, course and cessation of addictive behaviours 27 , 28 provide a wealth of new ideas for prevention and treatment research with the target of implementing that knowledge in routine health care. European and international collaborations in the science field provide a further source of upcoming needs, fresh ideas and doubts about current beliefs. The IFT receives regular requests for research projects, but with publication clearance by commercial or public funding agencies. Such offers are not accepted: the right of free and uncontrolled publication possibilities is an absolute prerequisite.

These collaborations sometimes turn out to be hazardous minefields, and therefore the IFT keeps strict independence from all driving forces in the field. Limitations on the freedom of publication or of research options also limit creative processes. Planning and implementation of research at the IFT is often an ongoing and challenging balance between senior researcher experience and unconventional ideas of doctoral students. It is a necessary and daily practice to provide enough space and responsibility for young colleagues to face and master increasingly complex challenges. Presentations at conferences with international contacts are promoted—and expected.

Giving increasing project responsibility does not work with all new staff members; but after a few months we can detect those colleagues with the necessary bite, curiosity and active drive who will make their own way. To improve that situation, in senior researchers of the IFT started an internal education programme in addiction research for newly hired doctoral students; however, it emerged that such a programme was well beyond our resources and the available time.

The course provides education and training in addiction research, as well as in academic skills. The programme is now affiliated to the Chair of Addiction Research at the University of Dresden and funded by the Volkswagen Foundation. Being the responsible member of the IFT for many years, it is difficult to determine critically the factors for promoting creativity on the structural and individual levels in this research institute.

Finally, a decent level of economic pressure to maintain a certain level of funding, as well as intermittent reinforcement of positive developments for the IFT, might be additional essential factors. After 40 years of work, the IFT underwent a critical change of leadership in two steps, without problems, which brought with it fresh concepts and project ideas.

The basis for this change was the gradually increasing responsibility and scientific independence of senior staff members. Volume , Issue 8.
