I'm looking forward to seeing where the series goes from here. Mar 19, Coenraad rated it it was amazing. Harper Fox has created a groupie in me. Her version of the Arthur legend is written with so much confidence that I can only imagine it to be the actual truth of the events. The magical realism and also the very bloody realism of the fight scene are both de Harper Fox has created a groupie in me.

The magical realism and also the very bloody realism of the fight scene are both dealt with very well, and the entry of Guenevere, as well as the prophecy that Lance will betray Arthur, makes one wish that Harper Fox will deviate from the ending of the familiar tale. Now for part three - and as the series is called a quartet, one anticipates a to-be-published part four!

Harper Fox se historiese inkleding van haar weergawe van die bekende Arthur-verhaal oortuig en boei, en ek sien uit na deel drie - en vier, wat nog gepubliseer moet word. When last we saw Arthur and Lance, they were separated… Arthur invited Lance to leave with him, and be his right hand man, but Lance refused to leave his home unguarded.

This continues for a few years, until word reaches Lance that Arthur has been injured and may be dying. Lance barely hesitates before he jumps on the old horse he inherited from Ector, and off he goes. Where he runs in to a blast from his past, who turns out to be helpful. A gathering of Kings is taking place, but with Arthur injured not much is happening. Lance is able to help Arthur get back on his feet, the two have a bit of a reunion, and off we go! Arthur and Lance get up to some adventures in this book, chasing a dragon, dealing with political issues, and cementing their bond.

Merlin makes a couple of appearances, creating a bit of drama, and an expected character makes an appearance in an unexpected way at the end, causing even more drama. Now I love Arthur and Lance, and I am concerned about how their relationship is going to go in the next book. Harper has been following the basic set of myths involving King Arthur, with the exception of the physical love manifesting between Arthur and Lance, but we all know how this story ends. I am curious to see where she will take this story.

I love how she has woven all of this together, sneaking in myths in a way that makes sense. And the bond between Arthur and Lance is wonderful, they compliment each other beautifully. The first book has the introduction of the characters, the setting of the scene, the building of the drama and plot.

The last book has even more drama, the climactic end, and the happy-ever-after. The middle book can be problematic. That happened a bit with this book. There was certainly excitement, but it was just not quite as good as the excitement of the first book. There were new characters introduced, but they were not as interesting as Arthur and Lance, who we met in the first book.

There were traditional bits of myth woven in, but not as many, or at least as obviously as in the first book. But still, an excellent book, beautiful writing, creative use of an established set of myths, interesting characters, a little bit of physical love, and a realistic historical feeling to it all. Again I say, this is a story that I totally trust Harper Fox to write. Dec 21, Pamala rated it it was amazing. I highly recommend it. Lance has finally made his way back to Arthur after being apart almost three years.

Both are growing into the men that legend remembers—Arthur, regal politician and warrior and Lance, fiercely devoted and mystically gifted. This tale does a splendid job of retelling the tale as per usual but with all of these other lovely and fascinating details that might have happened as well. I am waiting with bated breath for the next book in the series. Jan 15, axolotli rated it really liked it. Much better than the first book! I loved in this book how the tension and destiny ramped up a bit I see this as more of a calmer link between the early exciting years and maybe the angsty times coming in book 3.

Lance and Art have been apart for over 3 years, during which Lance has educated himself while Arthur has been battling his way through the country. The reunion is and yet is not what Lance wanted. Battles, charging horses, e it is a while since I read book 1 but we jump right back into the story. Battles, charging horses, excalibur and the appearance of more names from the folklore.

And a lottle twist at the end. Not all going as Lance had hoped, so fingers crossed for him. Jan 03, Abi Walton rated it really liked it Shelves: mythology , history , lgbt , fantasy. This novella was so brilliant, I enjoyed more than book 1 I think as the tale of Arthur unfolds around Lace.

After years of separation, Lance and Arthur are finally together again on Brittan's border in King Coal's castle. What fascinates me about this legend is the warring between Christianity and its new God and the Old Gods who have to make way. I liked how this novella felt a lot darker as the two get older and ready to meet their fate.

The Greenwood and The Grail comes out in March and I cannot wait to devour it as quickly as I have these last two novella's Jan 01, Tanwen Cooper rated it it was ok. To be honest, I was hoping this would be better than it was. The story took forever to get going, spent a lot of words to say not a lot then rushed through the interesting part so i was really confused over what was happening.

This last factor wasnt helped by the fact that the author tended to drop historical or mythical notes in at odd moments when they didn't really seem to further the plot.

Jan 18, Louis A rated it liked it. I couldn't connect with Arthur at all, Lance was a bit better but still not really there. We'll see what the third part brings. Dec 31, Ratatoskr rated it really liked it. A trilogy's middle book with all the readerly angst that entails, but a perfect Yuletide read and a worthy addition to Arthurian lore. It was fine. Yes, the Vulgate does use it with an accusative. Dec 10, Nancy Wightman rated it it was amazing. The second book of the Arthur Trilogy is as fascinating as the first. The borders between "reality" and "fantasy" seem to be special interests for Harper Fox, and she's great at describing how events and people move through this surreal landscape. Art and Lance are such vivid characters, and their time together is very poignant but also interesting and fun. Harper Fox. In fact she simply continues working on what she loves best— creating worlds and stories for the huge cast of lovely gay men queuing up inside her head. She lives in rural Northumberland in northern England and does most of her writing at a pensioned-off kitchen table in her back garden, often with blanket and hot water bottle. She lives with her SO Jane, who has somehow put up with her for a quarter of a century now, and three enigmatic cats, chief among whom is Lucy, who knows the secret of the universe but isn't letting on.

When not writing, she either despairs or makes bread, specialities foccacia and her amazing seven-strand challah. You know how he feels about women.
