Her badly broken leg required surgery which left Kristi with a painful limp, causing her a number of difficulties in her daily life. Kristi's parents were in Florida at the time of the accident, so Shane visited her each day in the hospital as she recuperated. Upon discovering they were next-door neighbors Shane took on the responsibilities for the care and exercising of Kristi's dog. Shane had suffered his own losses before moving to Webster County, and was working through his own healing process as Kristi worked toward healing from her accident.
A forbidden attraction developed between them which further complicated their lives. Shane's personal involvement in Kristi's life was not accepted by Kristi's father, and Shane was forbidden to see Kristi as more than a friend. Their feelings for each other had grown strong, and their obstacles were numerous.
Laura V. Hilton develops strong characters a reader can relate to and grow to love.
She brings her characters to life, making the reader feel the emotions that her characters experience. This author knows her material well and writes an accurate depiction of both the Amish way of life and the complications that come with an attraction to a non-Amish individual.

The plot moved along at a great pace, and each new development in the story is a surprise. I had a great deal of difficulty putting this book down because of new developments that continued to pique my curiosity. This is a beautifully written Amish fiction book, the first in the series of The Amish of Webster County. Waiting for the next in the series is going to be a challenge! Healing Love was the first book I have read by this author, and I can tell you in all honesty, it won't be the last!
Jul 13, Cindy rated it it was amazing. Shane Zimmerman had an Amish name but he was not Amish, even though he lived in Amish country. In fact his father had left the Amish to marry his mother, and while he had no aspirations to be Amish, he did love his Amish grandparents, and he loved working with the animals on the Amish farms, where he was called upon for his services as a veterinarian. A young widower, he carried around a grudge against the vocation of midwives and their practice of using herbal treatments after his wife dies dur Shane Zimmerman had an Amish name but he was not Amish, even though he lived in Amish country.
A young widower, he carried around a grudge against the vocation of midwives and their practice of using herbal treatments after his wife dies during her pregnancy. He blamed the red raspberry tea she had drank, but it truth it was an aneurysm that killed her. A reckless driver has left midwife Kristi Lapp laying critically injured along the side of the road. She was sure she was dreaming about the good looking young man who had rescued her, but was surprised when he kept showing up at the hospital to visit her, and was also surprised to realize he was her new neighbor, the vet.
The attraction between them is measurable and the sparks fly every time they are near each other. Her father Ira is determined to put a stop to all of this foolishness, he cannot loose another child going over the fence. Hilton is such a talented author, she pulls this story together and leaves you ready for more! I loved these new characters in this new series and while it stands alone, you have to hope we will meet Shane and Kristi again. A beautiful story, that you will not be able to put down! Nov 16, Debbie rated it it was amazing. I just finished "Healing Love" by Laura Hilton.
This is the first book I have read by Laura Hilton but definitely will not be the last. This book is most assuredly 5 stars. I was drawn into the story from the first sentence. Kristi is injured in an accident and Shane saves her life. I couldn't wait to see how life would turned out for Kristi Lapp, An Amish midwife, and Shane Zimmerman, an English vet,who fell in love despite the two different lifestyles.
This book will have you cheering for Shane and Kristi and then have you booing for Shane and then you will have the same feelings for the Amish elders in this story. This story proves true love wins in the end. I am hoping there are more stories with Shane and Kristi. Oct 04, Barbara rated it it was amazing Shelves: amish , won. Laura Hilton had me caught from the very beginning -- an accident, a midwife, a veterinarian, and a mention of eye candy!
Chapter after chapter was a tug of war between Kristi and Shane's two worlds. As I read on and learned more about Shane and his family and Kristi and her family, and the losses that each family have experienced, I was drawn even more into their worlds. I got a kick our of the fact that Kristi's grandparents are snowbirds. I was reminded in this book by just how small this gre Laura Hilton had me caught from the very beginning -- an accident, a midwife, a veterinarian, and a mention of eye candy!
I was reminded in this book by just how small this great big world of ours really is. I loved this book and can't wait to read the next in The Amish of Webster County series! Sep 24, Carole Towriss rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites. Another wonderful story by Laura Hilton. Laura's characters are always spunky, never flat. It makes me wish they showed up more in the other books. Even Chinnok, the dog, had her own personality and contributed to the plot. Kristi works with herbs to help mothers deliver babies at home.
ALthough she is a "healer, she needs healing as much as Shane and this theme is gently woven throughout the book without being heavy-handed. I look forward to her next book! This is good. It's a nice read. I love the plot. The characters are well developed. View 1 comment. Feb 03, Kay Garrett rated it it was amazing Shelves: want-to-read. Krisiti has never married and is living at home with her parents while pursuing her career as a midwife. Shane is a young widower. Even though his wife died from a brain aneurysm, he has it in his mind that her death was from complications after her midwife gave her herbs to take making him have a high distrust for the profession. The accident left Kristi needing an operation to repair her badly broken leg with many months of rehabilitation ahead.
Shane is immediately drawn to her and wants to help out as much as he can. Since he is a veterinarian, it made sense that he would help her take care of her very active Siberian husky named Chinook taking him on runs and seeing that he is feed and watered meaning they would have daily contact. From the very beginning, their intense attraction to each other was evident to both of them. On one of their outings, Kristi gets to see and visit with Justus, her banned brother, Dori, his wife and their two kids. The old wounds of how he was banned for wishing to get an education to become a preacher not chosen like the Amish and not being able to see him for so many years, adds foreboding to her mind about where her relationship with Shane would take them.
All she knew was that she would never be able to marry another while having Shane in her heart. After great prayer, Shane approaches the bishop asking to join the Amish church to open the way for them to marry and to avoid Kristi from being banned from the church. The bishop denied his request which in the end had her father disowning her and making her leave his home.
With nowhere else to go, she called Shane who in turned called Justus. Will Shane find a way to become Amish for the love of his life or will Kristi turn her back on her raising for the man she loves? This touching love story has a lot of ups and down keeping your enthralled along the way. The ending was a surprise not only to Kristi and Shane but for me as well. I loved it! I highly recommend this book to another that loves Amish stories, clean romance stories or just a great all around well written good book. Since this is the first in the series, I will definitely be checking out more books in the Amish of Webster County series as well as other books by this author.

About this product
While on her way to an appointment she winds up in a buggy accident. Shane Zimmerman, her next door neighbor and local veterinarian happens by and finds her buggy and gets Kristi to the hospital. Because her parents are in Florida, Shane takes it upon himself to start visiting Kristi daily while she is in the hospital. He also decides to start taking care of Chinook, so that the dog can get the exercise he needs Kristi Lapp is a young Amish lady who is also a practicing midwife for her community. Soon though Kristi starts having feelings for Shane, and he feels drawn to her as well. Of course when Kristi's dad comes home and forbids Shane from having anything else to do with Kristi because he is afraid she might leave the faith. How can an Amish midwife and an Englisher vet ever have a chance at love? I became a fan of Laura V. Hilton after reading her last series, The Amish of Seymour, and I like how some of the characters from that series was mentioned in this book.
There were several things that I really liked about "Healing Love" but there were a few things that also fell a bit flat for me as well. So I am going to expound on the positive aspects first. The author captured my attention from the beginning pages. Kristi, a practicing Amish midwife has a buggy accident while on her way to visit a patient. Well that grabbed my attention, and then we are introduced to Shane Zimmeran, a promising character who has roots that harken back to the Amish but is now an Englisher. As Kristi's neighbor he gets her to the hospital, and then starts spending time with her.
They are drawn to each other, but both know that a relationship is next to impossible. Seems though they find themselves together at every turn, as if fate is drawing them together. Shane's feelings about midwives really was understandable. I thought the secondary story of Shane's sister and her baby added to the overall effect of the story. I always enjoy whenever a dog is added to a story and with this one we have Chinook, Kristi's dog who loved Shane as well.
The things that fell a bit flat for me was the complaining that Kristi often did about English food, I mean that sort of got old fast. I also felt like Kristi's dad, and uncle were a bit wishy washy when it came to trying to keep Kristi and Shane apart, and I was really shocked at the manner in which Ira threw Kristi out of the house.

Kristi Lapp is an Amish midwife who is injured in a buggy accident. Her English neighbor Shane Zimmerman happens upon the accident on his way home from his Veterinarian practice. He phones for an ambulance after finding Kristi bleeding profusely from an injury to her leg. Shane takes it upon himself to visit Kristi while she is hospitalized. Kristi also finds herself drawn to Shane.
Both know that coming from different backgrounds, Kristi b Love Is Patient! Both know that coming from different backgrounds, Kristi being Amish and Shane being English; nothing could ever come of their attraction to each other. When Shane finds out that Kristi is a midwife he knows for sure that a relationship between them could never happen. But yet, the attraction is there. Ira Lapp warns Shane to stay away from Kristi. This is not the first Amish fiction book that I have read by this author. I loved every one of them.
Healing Love did not disappoint me. I was drawn in from page one and the story kept building right to the last page. I would highly recommend this book to all Amish fiction lovers. Thank you Laura V. Hilton for another delightful read. This book was provided by Whitaker House for review purposes.
The opinions expressed are mine alone. Sep 02, Trinity Rose rated it really liked it. Healing Love by Laura V. Hilton is a very sweet, enjoyable book. It started out slow, but soon was well worth reading. I enjoyed how Kristi and Shane got to know each other. They lived next door to each other, but never really met. Shane and Kristi find out that they share more than their love of animals and find out they are kindred spirits. Shane is a vet, but is missing love in his life. His wife died after only being married a few years. Kristi is a midwife and finds herself alone in life. If they fall in love one of them has to leave their way of life to join the other.

Will Shane forget his modern conviences of being a vet to live with the Amish? Will Kristi leave the Amish and be shunned to be with Shane? Her family has already lost her older brother to the world. Will she put her family through more heartache and pain? Will there love for each other heal their hearts or will it be just to much for them to go through?
Very good book. I recommend it for your Amish reading pleasure. Thank you to Whitaker House for providing this book for review. I was not required to write a positive review.
The opinions I have expressed are my own. Jul 13, "Whoopie rated it it was amazing. Not just for Kristi, but other characters in the book as well. Shane Zimmerman, an Englisher in an Amish area, finds Kristi Lapp, whom he recognizes as his Amish neighbor, on the side of the road, a victim of a reckless driver. From that encounter on, Kristi and Shane, try as hard as they can, but can't deny the strong attraction between them.
Despite all the challenges that would keep them apart, will they be able to stay together? Kristi is a midwife. Can he trust her? Shane is English yet comes from an Amish background. His father left the Amish to marry his mother. Hilton keeps you wondering throughout the book. As I stated, I did not want to put the book down…..
I look forward to the next book in this series. Jul 29, Faye rated it really liked it. A story about the choices we are willing to make for love. Kristi Lapp's takes a sharp turn, when she is hit by a car, that ends up breaking her leg so that it is hard for her to take care of her Siberian Husky, Chinook. Shane is a war veteran and veterinarian, and an Englisher, who offers to help Kristi with her dog.
As their friendship grows Kristi and Shane struggle to keep their feelings in check. I really liked Ms. Hilton's writing voice, this is the first time for me actually reading something A story about the choices we are willing to make for love. Hilton's writing voice, this is the first time for me actually reading something by this author after hearing some great things about her : I think that the characters were well developed and I liked how they both tried to keep their feelings in check, and to respect that they were from different worlds.
I also thought that they interacted well, and I liked how they always seemed to run into each other even though they were sort of avoiding each other to some extent. I think that there were many details in the book's setting that were really realistic to what Amish is like, and I like how it showed the Amish doing normal things like going to McDonalds : Overall, I think that this was a sweet Amish romance, that was well written, and had some great leading characters.
A book that I would recommend to fans of Amish fiction : I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Jul 26, Carolyn E rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this book. This is a traditional story about an Amish woman falling in love with a non-Amish man, but with a twist. Fortunately, Shane Zimmerman's grandparents were Amish, so Shane was already familiar with the restrictions place on this kind of relationship. I don't want to give away the ending, so I will say no more, but it is a delightful story. I highly recommend it, and am looking forward to reading the next book in this series, Surrendered Love. Well written characters, strong romantic pull and the conflict of Amish and Englischer kept my attention to the very end.
I found this book hard to put down and could not figure out which way the story was going to go. Would Kristi choose to leave her Amish family and be shunned? Or would Shane give up the life he was used to and turn Amish in order to be with Kristi? The author surprised me and kept me guessing till the end. I recommend this book to any fans of Amish fiction. Mar 30, Brittany rated it it was amazing. Aug 16, Rachel rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites.
