His body of work documenting the delinquent gangs of the Parisian suburbs provides an unrivaled level of insight into this rarely seen side to the French capital. We spoke with Morvan about his desire to serve as an eyewitness, his addiction to adventure and the future of photojournalism. Learn more about the Leica M-System.
When did you actually first start shooting? It was to please my father that I started studying science. Ever since I was five years old and first started reading I was fond of books about history.

I started as an amateur photographer at the age of twelve. I first started to get more serious about photography during the time of the youth revolutions throughout Europe. It was at this time that I decided to become an eyewitness, to testify later to the tragedy of the human world. When did you start shooting with Leica cameras? And how did your chosen camera aid your work as a photojournalist? That idea really stuck with me — A head full of dreams and heroism, ready to sacrifice my life with a Leica in my hands.
My first Leica was an M3 with a 50mm lens.
It was a gift from a friend and I quickly got used to the rangefinder. I loved it. You worked for over 20 years documenting the gangs of Paris. What was it that drew you into this world? Back in I had to start with something. I decided to do the same stuff in Paris with the motorbike gangs. The only cost to me was blood and tears for a young guy with big dreams. How do your images of the Parisian gangs relate to your other work, specifically your war photography? Are there any similarities between the two? In my mind, the same people inhabit each of these two different worlds: be it on the frontline of the battlefield or the frontline in the battle for the streets.
Realizing this allowed me to easily switch from one world to the other. Your immersion in the world of these Parisian gangs has produced some incredibly candid and raw images. How did you manage to gain this kind of access? It was the same for me as it is for any embedded photojournalist. How do you think the mentality of these young men aided or hindered your work? Things were very different then to the way they are now.
During the 70s and 80s people liked to exhibit themselves. Equally, the desire to belong, to be a member of a tribe, meant they would do whatever they could to be a part of something. Her art is a symphony in which the artist eye is 'merged' with her camera's lenses completely. Inna's art is a powerful expression of harmonious inter-connection between beauty, soul and spirit".
New York. All works are authored prints on silk paper, and they will be permanently displayed at the orphanage. The collection forms a photo-essay featuring a dialogue between the eternal walls of Jerusalem and the unique skies over the centre of the Jewish universe. It also features the dialogue between the skies over Israel and the open places of the country at the Galilee desert, the Kinneret sea, and the ever mystic plains of Safed. Her penetrating photography transcends, with emotional precision, many of those questions that Jewish people continuously face on the path of their history.
But most importantly, we see and feel quite palpably the mighty rays of hope in Inna's work; and one should remember that hope is that most essential element of Jewish existence. In Inna's works devoted to Israel, its history and present, this hope shines through and from Jerusalem, the heart of Israel. It is namely Jerusalem where the mightiness of that hope originates and reaches out to Jewish people and to all of us who love, understand and support Israel and who are charged with its energy and are blessed with it".
The Route. Family Edition. The exhibited works have been taken by the artist for more than a decade , and cover 16 countries. In most of those countries, during the timeline from the XII century onward, the Jewish population experienced the most dramatic turns of their destiny; in some of them - tragic ones and those which are beyond rational comprehension.
At the same time, the Jewish heritage in its various and numerous dimensions has been imprinted on the general development of civic societies in every country of Europe and the rest of the world, and still contributes to it largely. This ongoing interconnection is another important subject of the author's concept. Both families were from Ukraine, Dnepropetrovsk.
After the annihilation of Jewish life there under Soviet rule for over 70 years, today it has made a remarkable comeback in Ukraine, notably, in Dnepropetrovsk, a place which is highly symbolic and meaningful for a vast part of world Jewry. There are two ways of remembering history: one can be called 'an academic' one, and another - a living one.
The latter allows us to follow that eternal soul travelling; and it also helps to bring one's own soul to a warming and nourishing place. The place of belonging. The subjects photographed for the collection are exhibits of Jewish Memory and Holocaust in the Ukraine Museum opened in October in Dnepropetrovsk, one of the large industrial and scientific centres of Ukraine, and one of the most important centres of Jewish life there, both historically and, as the result of elaborate efforts, from the early s onward, too.
The idea of this collection is to bring together rare and original artefacts of Jewish life in Ukraine and its tragic Holocaust period with the feelings and thoughts of modern day' visitors to the museum. Thousands of people, old and young, Jewish and not, flock into the new Museum with an unsaturated desire to see, to know, to re-discover one's roots.
To make this Pilgrimage to one's Home. Artistically speaking, the collection is built on contrasts: modern day people's reflections seen by the artist in a soft camera approach providing viewers with a privacy for their thoughts; and memories are punctuated by laconic and graphic images of the past, or the embodiement of horror.

In this way, Inna Rogatchi believes that a whole perception of the Jewish world of Ukraine is achieved and relayed to the viewers in such a way as to balance thought and emotion. It also brings to us the past, - and at the same time, it enforces us, with a strong power, for the future". Essential in Spirit is a part of a bigger project devoted to Italy and presenting it from a point of view connecting the country's history and its culture with a modern day approach. The works are complimented by the author's highlights, and musical art-video featuring the collection.

The collection in question is the result of almost twenty years of research and five years of actual photographing by Inna Rogatchi in Florence and Tuscany. The author continues to work on one of her favorite themes - Italy in many of its facets and aspects. In its medium, the collection is a limited edition of luxurious authored pygment digital ink prints on cotton paper. They are done in series of 15 and 20, and are numbered and signed by the author. And it seems to me that never is beauty more appealing and memorable than when it is gentle and delicate, as it is in Botticelli's style and understanding" , - says the author.
Homage To Italian Cinema. There is no coincidence that the inaugural exhibition of the collection has been shown in Venice, on the occasion of the 69th Venice Film Festival; the oldest movie festival in the world, the festival which celebrates the very spirit of Italian cinema and guards its unique tradition.
The author opted for collage as the technical genre for the series in an effort to reflect on the subtle but multi-layered 'tissue' of classic Italian cinema, on its gentle complexity and poetic ambiguity. It exists also in a form of a musical art-video created by the author.
